Plicaria is a small genus whose species fruit in burned areas, usually in spring. They are similar to pezizas (and are included in Peziza by some mycologists), but have a dark brown to black fertile surface and spherical rather than ellipsoid spores. Plicaria endocarpoides produces dark brownish cup-shaped fruitbodies with a tendency to flatten out in age; the spores are smooth, 8--10 µm diameter.
